Our time in New Orleans reminds me of how the Lenten journey
invites us to remove all that keeps us safe from a confrontation
with self. There is nothing like living in community to show
you how much you like being by yourself, doing things your
own way, avoiding all the challenges of different perspectives
and behaviours. When we go on such a mission trip, all pretenses
drop away. Sleeping in a room with 10 others reveals who snores
the most, who is easy to wake up, who doesn't change clothes
from day to day. Bumping into food labelled for someone else,
or dishes left in the sink or overflowing trash cans can make
you cranky....remember ... we are here to serve, to let go
of business as usual, to reveal our lack of knowledge about
the city, the people we are called to serve, even those we
are called to live with. It is soul work, and there is more
dust flying than the thin set mortar we scraped from the tiles.
